LOVE from Haiti

LOVE from Haiti

Happy children of the world join the dance of love!

55-gallon drums are cut and crafted into art. This cut metal art form began with imaginative cemetery crosses in Croix des Bouquets village in the 1930s. The village is now a center for this artistic tradition.

The nonprofit CAH, Comité Artisanal Haitien or Haitian Committee of Artisans, markets and exports crafts made by Haitian artisans, cooperatives and craft groups. The artisans, whose work CAH promotes, have organized themselves in a variety of ways. Some are cooperative associations, some are family workshops and some are independent artisans; all depend on the efforts of CAH to market their handicrafts for a fair wage. CAH provides marketing and promotional expertise, training in literacy and business skills for artisans, fair wages and advances on orders, and financial assistance in case of health emergencies. CAH artisans sell their work through local tourist sales and for export through the fair trade market.

These delightful terracotta pigs are made with clay dug from the mountainside near the village of Pomaire, Chile. This clay is traditionally used to create earthenware cookware used over an open fire, but in this instance it is transformed into a “chanchito,” a little three-legged pig. These are given to friends as tokens of love and good fortune.

Potters working with Chilean artisan group Comparte create this small pig from earthenware clay. After it has been formed, it is set in the sun to dry. When it has been sun-dried, it is fired. The adobe firing oven, heated to a temperature of 800 to 900 degrees Celsius, is fueled by eucalyptus wood purchased from plantations along Chile’s coast. Potters determine length of firing by size of the pottery pieces and capacity of the adobe kiln.

May the pig of good fortune smile on you!

New Twist Napkin Ring: Have an eco-friendly picnic with bright New Twist Napkin Rings. Hand-woven napkin ring in assorted bright colors is made from recycled juice boxes. Filipino artisans clean, cut and weave the material into a useful and decorative product.

No-Blow Picnic Table Weights: No more blown-away tablecloths! A creative and attractive way to secure your tablecloth on a summer outing. Four onyx squares each have a spring-loaded clip that attaches to a tablecloth corner, giving just enough weight to prevent it from being lifted by an unexpected gust of wind.

Today is International Women’s Day!

Support Fair Trade to empower women all over the world!

“Countries where women lack land ownership rights or access to credit have significantly more malnourished children. By empowering rural women we could end the hidden development tragedy of stunting, which affects almost 200 million children worldwide,”

“On this International Women’s Day, I urge governments, civil society and the private sector to commit to gender equality and the empowerment of women – as a fundamental human right and a force for the benefit of all.”

Show your love with Fair Trade Chocolate

Show your love with Fair Trade Chocolate

Do you have any plans for this year’s Valentine’s Day?

How about making delocious chocolate mousses with fair trade chocolate for your loved ones?

Little Hot Chocolate Mousses

The point of these wonderful  puddings is that the centre is still blissfully liquid when you serve them, so don’t be tempted to cook them for any longer than the stated time. They are delicious served on their own or with ice cream.

Ingredients

5 medium eggs plus 5 medium egg yolks

115g caster sugar

225g Divine 70% Dark Chocolate

200g salted butter

75g plain flour

50g cocoa Powder

Ice cream to serve

8 ramekins, buttered or non stick

Method

Put the eggs, egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl and beat with an electric hand held mixer until the mixture is pale yellow (10-15mins).

Put the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of steaming, but not boiling, water (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Melt gently, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove the bowl from the heat. Add a small amount of the egg and sugar mixture to the melted chocolate and stir until well mixed. Add the rest of the egg mixture and mix well. Sift the flour and cocoa powder into the bowl and gently fold in with a large metal spoon until just mixed.

Stand the prepared ramekins in a roasting tin and spoon the mixture into the ramekins (the mixture should come to just below the rim).

Bake on the middle shelf of a preheated oven (180oC 350oF Gas mark 4) for 10-12 minutes, until risen and just firm to the touch. Don’t cook them any longer than this or they will set inside.

Run a round-bladed knife around the inside of each ramekin to loosen the puddings, then carefully turn them out onto individual plates. Dust with cocoa powder and serve immediately, either on their own or with your favourite ice cream.
